Caleisha Thrower

Occupational Therapist

As a local of the Port Macquarie community, I completed my studies at Charles Sturt University in 2023, right in the heart of my hometown. I have experience working in mental health, paediatrics, neurodiversity, stroke rehabilitation, and palliative care.

My passion for Occupational Therapy was initially sparked by my work as a surf coach and through volunteering with organisations such as Surfing the Spectrum. These experiences have shaped my approach to supporting individuals in achieving their fullest potential in a therapy setting that best suits their unique needs.

When I’m not at work, you’ll find me embracing the coastal lifestyle, whether it’s spearfishing, surfing, or working in my (sometimes successful) vegetable garden.

What do you love most about your job?

I love connecting with my clients through genuine, down to earth conversations, getting to know what truly matters to them, and incorporating that into therapy. Occupational therapy is such a dynamic and fascinating field, becoming an ‘expert’ in other people’s occupations is both rewarding and a lot of fun!

Areas of interest?

My interests within occupational therapy are broad and varied. While I enjoy working in the pediatric space, I’m especially passionate about supporting individuals in the mental health and neurodiversity space. Exploring the unique challenges and strengths of each person continues to inspire my approach to therapy.

Your top tip

My top tip is to “take a deep breath.” It’s the quickest way to regulate your nervous system in any situation. A deep breath stimulates the vagus nerve, which plays a key role in regulating your fight, flight, or freeze responses.

People would be surprised if they knew…

While studying at university, I worked for an aviation company (helicopters) and completed a Certificate II in Auslan (Australian Sign Language).
